The Rebirth of a Star

Following the lead single to her new album Virgin, Lorde lets us into the treacherous deepend of her personal life with ‘Man Of The Year’. Released on May 29th of 2025, the second single of Lorde’s upcoming album blossoms raw and genuine in the middle of the tracklist—introducing us to the singer’s new colors and preparing us to be blown away by her new musical era.

Breathtaking, the lyrics are disheartening, as the singer describes how she has morphed into a different person and is trying to find her way back to her day-to-day life. The melody complements her words, as her characteristic slow-tempo, husky voice tells a story. However, as the song progresses, a beat is introduced and the melody builds in anticipation before dropping satisfyingly.

As she mentioned in one of her Instagram posts, this song dives deep into her personal life. Born out of her experience attending the GQ Man of the Year event, the song grapples with her previous statements about how her gender is constantly expanding—how she feels like a woman just as much as she feels like a man.

“How I hope that I’m remembered, my gold chain, my shoulders, my face in the light. I didn’t think he’d appear. Let’s hear it for the man of the year,” she sings, opening the door for us to explore her perspective and how she has discovered that no one could ever love her more than she loves herself.

‘Man Of The Year’ explores more than just gender identity and self-acceptance—it also marks the introduction of a new persona to the public, especially to her beloved fans. This new song is undeniably the rebirth of a star—not only in the music industry but personally as well. And we’re here for it.
