Never Enough: The Sun of a Turnstile Summer

Four years after the release of GLOW ON—the album that launched them into stardom—the American hardcore punk band Turnstile returns with a new record, a new sound, and an attempt to reach a bar previously set high by no one other than themselves. Representing alternative youth at its best, the band is known for their emphasis on self-reflection and personal growth. However, with their newest album NEVER ENOUGH, the conversation expands around time, heartbreak, and the inevitable embrace of loneliness.

Composed of fourteen songs, three music videos and a fifty minute visual album, NEVER ENOUGH is one of the most impressive musical projects of the year. Released on June 6th, 2025 the album has sparked some controversy among fans regarding the new direction the band has taken. After deciding to reinvent themselves for a new musical era, the fans were left worried that their sound had softened and drifted too far away from their hardcore essence.

Although musically the band maintains their characteristic rock sound, with the addition of elements like synths, trumpets, saxophones and various 80’s elements, this record has been deemed as a form of radio rock with songs that loosely fall into pop-punk and even indie pop genres.

NEVER ENOUGH does feel lighter than their previous work, but that doesn’t take away from the record’s versatility—it flows seamlessly. There is a balance between the nature of the songs, all by the hand of long, peaceful transitions that occasionally burst into upbeat head-bangers. The lyrics compliment the melodies—evoking time, heartache, loneliness and hope. It all feels like slow motion—the low tide before the storm—and the clock speeds up again only when we are ready for it. It feels like Turnstile through and through. The composition of the album is inspiring, and it proves once again that the minds behind the album are not only professional, but also deeply passionate about their work.

Each single is accompanied by a corresponding music video, directed by band members Yates and McCrory. Despite the fact that some of the visuals feel quiet and Yates’ expression is forlorn, they all evolve to be a blend of melancholy and well-orchestrated frenzy. From playing in desolate places to full blown stage-diving in the middle of a performance, the music videos feel specially crafted for the fans—a heartfelt tribute to those who have witnessed the band’s evolution.

Typically known for being a quintet, the band experienced a shift when guitarist Brady Ebert left the band in 2022. Although Meg Mills has since joined the band, NEVER ENOUGH was recorded with only four members. This sparked some criticism about the reduced emphasis on guitar and influenced their opinion on the record. However it also taught fans to fall in love with the simplicity of the album, to enjoy it for what it is—a different face of the same band.

The visual album film TURNSTILE: NEVER ENOUGH premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival and was screened in select theaters across the U.S., gathering masses to start their evening sitting down, and ending it in the middle of a mosh pit right below the screen. Promotion for the album included a show at Under the K Bridge in Brooklyn where Paramore’s lead singer Hayley Williams joined their band onstage. As well as a performance of a medley of “I Care/ Dull” for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The band is officially kicking off their tour the second week of September performing in different outdoor venues with support from Jane Remover, Speed, Blood Orange, Amyl and The Sniffers, The Garden, High Vis, and Mannequin Pussy.
